Anarchy is Order Without Power

Selected Writings of P. J. Proudhon
Here are a few interesting thoughts from P.-J. Proudhon that are worth spending some time to think about.

“To be GOVERNED is to be watched, inspected, spied upon, directed, law-driven, numbered, regulated, enrolled, indoctrinated, preached at, controlled, checked, estimated, valued, censured, commanded, by creatures who have neither the right nor the wisdom nor the virtue to do so. To be GOVERNED is to be at every operation, at every transaction noted, registered, counted, taxed, stamped, measured, numbered, assessed, licensed, authorized, admonished, prevented, forbidden, reformed, corrected, punished. It is, under pretext of public utility, and in the name of the general interest, to be place[d] under contribution, drilled, fleeced, exploited, monopolized, extorted from, squeezed, hoaxed, robbed; then, at the slightest resistance, the first word of complaint, to be repressed, fined, vilified, harassed, hunted down, abused, clubbed, disarmed, bound, choked, imprisoned, judged, condemned, shot, deported, sacrificed, sold, betrayed; and to crown all, mocked, ridiculed, derided, outraged, dishonored. That is government; that is its justice; that is its morality.”

” ‘Capital’ … in the political field is analogous to ‘government’… The economic idea of capitalism, the politics of government or of authority, and the theological idea of the Church are three identical ideas, linked in various ways. To attack one of them is equivalent to attacking all of them . . . What capital does to labour, and the State to liberty, the Church does to the spirit. This trinity of absolutism is as baneful in practice as it is in philosophy. The most effective means for oppressing the people would be simultaneously to enslave its body, its will and its reason.”

You know that saying, fighting for peace is like fucking for virginity? On the same token, politicking for freedom is just like fighting for peace.

But I’m here to plug one of my favorite Web resources ever: theanarchistlibrary.org . A great collection of anarchist writings from Proudhon’s days till last week, all free of copyright. You can pick and read one or download the lot via torrent. I got myself an ereader specifically to carry all of it with me.

[COMMENT by Lorenzo: Thanks for the great link: http://www.theanarchistlibrary.org ]
